WHEN TO GO TO TANZANIA

The best time to visit Tanzania depends on what wildlife you’d like to spot. The country’s seasons and wildlife numbers are dictated by the rains, so you’ll have a slightly different experience depending on when you choose to visit.
Tanzania’s headline attraction is the Great Migration, which occurs year-round across the Serengeti. Many people flock here between July and September for a chance to witness huge herds of wildebeest and zebra crossing the Mara River — panic ensues as they try to avoid the jaws of crocodiles and other predators waiting to pounce. You’ll see lots of vehicles in the park at this time of year, though.
Tanzania’s ‘green season’, between November and March, is much quieter. While there’s a chance of rain showers, it’s a fantastic time for birdwatching as migratory species arrive in their thousands. You’ll also see Great Migration herds with their newly born calves.
The only time we tend to avoid Tanzania is between April and May, when heavy rains can disrupt wildlife viewing.

HIGHLIGHTS

Kilimanjaro

Crowned by the Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, Kilimanjaro National Park is one of Tanzania Popular parks. In 1987, UNESCO declared Kilimanjaro a World Heritage Site due to its uniqueness. The Kilimanjaro Mountain is located in the Northern Tanzania right to the border to the Kenyan republic in Eastern Africa.
Rising abruptly from the open plains, capped by snow and frequently fringed by clouds, it is one of the Africa classic images. Kilimanjaro is a dormant but not extinct volcano.
Apart from a mountain, the park offers other attractions and there are some rare and endemic species of flora and fauna. 2,500 species of plants and 140 mammal species have been recorded.
Major tourism activity in the Park is mountain climbing in which tourists climb the mountain by using routes available.
Any reasonably fit person can conquer Kilimanjaro. Total climb normally take five to six days and involves four or five overnight stays in comfortable mountain huts.
There are several routes including Marangu, the easiest to climb and therefore the more popular, Machame, Shira, Umbwe and Rongai are other routes.

Mahale Mountains

Mahale Mountains National Park may be ignored by most tourists visiting Tanzania, but those wanting to get closer to their closest genetic relative, the chimpanzee, simply have to visit the Mahale Mountains. The park presents the best chimp tracking experience in Tanzania and visitors also fall in love with its stunning beauty. Better yet, Mahale Mountains is home to some of the glittery sand beaches that Africa is so famous for.

Manyara

Think of Lake Manyara as a mini Serengeti. The place is very small in size, and a majority of the area is covered by the lake itself, but it still hosts as many as 11 ecosystems and a vast and varied wildlife. The groundwater forest surroundings at Lake Manyara offer a much-needed break from African savannahs. Tree-climbing lions are the superstars here, but predator sightings are difficult. A close encounter with hundreds of elephants is the next best thing.
