Governors Camp Kenya

The Governors’ Camps in Masai Mara are located on the banks of the Mara River, and during colonial rule, were reserved only for Kenya’s governors. Governors Camp is by far the best value for money accommodation in the Mara and it consist of 37 tents all with fabulous views over the river.

Cottars Kenya

Cottars 1920 camp is situated on a hillside within a small private concession bordering the south eastern corner of the Masai Mara.
Cottar’s 1920s is one of the Mara’s most exclusive and upmarket camps, featuring a classic and colonial style as the name suggests. The camp is run by Calvin and Louise Cottar whose family have hosted safaris in Kenya since the colonial days. Attention to detail and personal service are complimented by expert guiding and fine dining. The accommodation is very comfortable, retaining an authentic tented feel and having quite luxurious furnishings. Staying in Cottars will bring you back to a long gone are.

Greystone Mahale, Tanzania

Set in an isolated location, the camp is accessed by charter flight and local pirogue down the stunning Lake Tanganyika. Accommodation is in six exotic wooden bandas overlooking the white sand beach. This luxurious camp is located in a small sandy bay lined with palm trees and backing on to the lush green slopes of the Mahale Mountains; this area of western Tanzania is home to the world’s largest populations of chimpanzees, which guests can observe amongst the vines, waterfalls, exotic birds and butterflies. As well as chimpanzee tracking, many water-based activities are on offer, from snorkelling to fishing.

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Tanzania

Mara Expedition Camp, Kenya

Mara Expedition Camp is a magical revisiting of the past, drawing from Africa’s original explorers’ designs and designed for those who search for East Africa’s romantic safari era. It is safari chic with six light and airy, spacious canvas tents, each with en-suite bathrooms where you enjoy piping hot water from huge brass safari showers. It is tucked away under the grove of Africa ebony trees, and at night, the main area is lit by lantern and candlelit, simple in design, but just enough for all the comforts.

Beho Beho, Tanzania

Beho Beho is without doubt a magical place, one of the best for the Selous for sure. Beho Beho is on top of a small hill in the cooler highlands so it enjoys the cooling breezes from which its name derives. While Beho Beho is known as a camp it is more of a lodge with permanent buildings throughout including the rooms. Each of the 9 en-suite rooms, or bandas as they are known locally, are built out of local stone and palm leaf thatch. They are enormous with the most beautiful views of the bush and furnished with colonial era.furniture.

The Real Safaris team is continuously working to find the best possible safari places for you. We have been in the safari industry for a long time…20 years and counting. Natalie Masseus, founder of Real Safaris has lived in Gabon at the end of the last millenium, beginning 2000 and has been in charge of setting up eco-tourism in the Congo Basin. She has visited approximately half of the African countries and she spends a large amount of time in Africa trying to find new and exciting places for your visits. Real Safaris know how some of the lodges have evolved over time, which of them are exceptionally good and why. We have been to all the places we cover on this site and we know all the details of each accommodation or area. We like to support local run family businesses in each of the safari countries.
